When emergency calls come in, firefighters never know the exact hazards awaiting them around the corner. That unpredictable reality was put to the ultimate test at the Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee (TERC) Regional Extrication Challenge, hosted locally at Standard Auto Wreckers.
After two days of relentless, high-pressure problem solving, Markham Fire and Emergency Services took first place, officially earning their ticket to represent Canada at the 2027 World Rescue Challenge in Dubai!
A Proven Proving Ground: Hosted by Standard Auto Wreckers
Setting up authentic, real-world crash evolutions requires serious logistical support. Markham Fire extends immense gratitude to David Gold and the team at Standard Auto Wreckers for their hospitality and generosity. Providing access to their scrap yard made it possible to stage realistic multi-vehicle entanglements, giving crews an unparalleled training environment.
The competition brought together some of the best vehicle extrication teams across the Greater Toronto Area:
- Markham Fire and Emergency Services
- Oakville Fire department
- Burlington Fire Department
- Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service
High-Stakes Scenarios: The Ultimate 20-Minute Test
The event kicked off with a dedicated half-day educational workshop, where crews learned from leading vehicle extrication experts on the latest techniques and modern tooling. With modern vehicle architecture rapidly evolving—featuring high-strength boron steel, hidden side-curtain airbag cylinders, reinforced pillars, and high-voltage electric vehicle (EV) battery packs—staying ahead of cutting-edge vehicle construction is essential.
Following the workshops, teams faced two distinct, timed challenge pits:
- Unlimited Pit: Full access to all heavy hydraulic rescue tools (cutters, spreaders, and rams) to manage a heavy entrapment.
- Limited Pit: No hydraulic tools permitted—requiring firefighters to rely strictly on hand tools, reciprocating saws, pneumatic lifting bags, and mechanical advantage.
The 20-Minute Countdown Under Sequester
In both pits, teams were held in sequester until their run began. Kept completely blind to the wreck until turning the corner, crews had only 20 minutes to:
- Complete a full 360-degree scene size-up
- Mitigate hazards and stabilize the vehicles
- Formulate and adapt an extrication path
- Carefully package the patient onto a backboard and transfer care
To maximize realism, the evolutions featured live patients rather than training mannequins. Assessors assigned dynamic injuries to the live victims, meaning the medical team had to accurately triage and treat trauma in real time. Because the patient’s condition dictated whether an extrication plan had to switch from controlled to rapid, medics and technical cutters had to maintain constant, seamless communication.
Meet the Winning Markham Squad
Markham’s victory reflected textbook teamwork, command structure, and precision:
- Incident Commander (IC): Brad Sterling
- Medics: Daniel Seck & Richard Spicer
- Technicians: Daniel Cresswell, Amanie Mclaren, & Horatiu Pantea
- Team Manager: Howie Tse
Every member executed their role under calm command: medics shielded and monitored the live patient, while technicians systematically cleared glass, peeled roofs, and displaced structural posts to open a safe egress pathway.
Next Stop: Rio de Janeiro 2026, Dubai 2027
This regional victory comes on the heels of intensive preparation. Markham recently completed a rigorous training camp led by visiting North American Vehicle Rescue Association (NAVRA) assessors from Florida, fine-tuning their skills ahead of the global circuit.
While the Dubai 2027 bid is now locked in, the team’s international journey begins much sooner. Markham Fire is set to compete under NAVRA at the World Rescue Challenge in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 17–23.
Carrying momentum, elite training, and regional gold, the team looks forward to representing their community and country against the best rescue teams on the planet.
Congratulations to all participating GTA departments and thank you to the evaluators, volunteers, and Standard Auto Wreckers for making this premier rescue event possible!
